Re “Some Advice for Young Conservatives,” by Robert P. George (Opinion guest essay, Sept. 26):
It was striking to me how much Dr. George’s defense of pluralism, diversity of thought, critical thinking and respectful dialogue resonated for me from a different but complementary liberal perspective.
Dr. George is a conservative and addresses his article in part to conservatives. But his arguments apply as much to liberals at universities across the country who today also frequently face the ostracism and marginalization that he describes conservatives facing.
Liberalism and tolerance for intellectual diversity and value pluralism have declined profoundly in American higher education in the past decade. They’ve frequently been replaced by rigid orthodoxies, absolutism and intolerant certainties, refusals of dialogue and selective application of freedoms — including freedom of speech and assembly — rather than a universal one.
A conservative’s defense of liberal democratic values is a salutary reminder of what potentially binds us ethically, empathetically, intellectually and civically. This is true even when we disagree — sometimes vehemently — on many moral and social issues but choose to reaffirm our democratic values despite and indeed because of our differences and shared constitutional and civic commitments.

To the Editor:
Thank you for publishing thoughtful conservative opinion articles like the one by Prof. Robert George. Many moderate conservatives like me feel unrepresented in the media and in politics. Thank you for showing that while we are perhaps in the minority, we are not alone.
